Golfer’s elbow is a condition that can cause pain and inflammation in the tendons connected to the forearm and elbow. Just like tennis elbow, this condition manifests on the bony bump on the outside of your elbow. Read on to know how you can detect, prevent, and treat this common golf injury.

 

Causes and Symptoms

Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) can be sustained from gripping or swinging clubs too forcefully. The muscles and tendons that control your wrist and fingers can be damaged by the force and repeated stress when you lift your golf club incorrectly. You could also be at higher risk of developing golfer’s elbow if you’re overweight, aged 40 or older and/or an active smoker.

 

The pain caused by golfer’s elbow can attack suddenly, and it might worsen when you swing a golf club, squeeze or pitch a ball, turn a doorknob, lift weights, shake hands, or pick something up with your palm down.

 

Some symptoms of golfer’s elbow include pain and tenderness on the inner side of the elbow that can extend to the inner side of the forearm. Elbows might also be stiff, and clenching your fists may be painful in some instances. Occasionally, this is accompanied by numbness or tingling.

 

Treatment and Prevention

Flexibility is important for any golfer, and you’ll lost a huge fraction of this advantage if you don’t look after your elbow. The faster you begin your treatment, the sooner you’ll be able to resume golfing without the nagging elbow pain.

 

If rest, ice and over-the-counter pain relievers don’t seem to be working for alleviating the pain from your elbow anymore, it might be the right time to consult your physician. Moreover, medical assistance might be needed if your elbow continues to feel hot and inflamed, or when it looks deformed and you’re no longer able to bend it.

 

The best way to prevent golfer’s elbow is to learn the right way to grip your club and perform your golf swings, which can be achieved by constant practice. Following a golf fitness program is highly recommended since the series of workouts you’ll do are suited for the physical demands of playing golf.

Remember that even if you have the best equipment and trained to endure golf rounds, you won’t be able to perform effectively with a persistent injury such as golfer’s elbow. Aside from keeping yourself in good shape, don’t forget to educate yourself on how you can prevent injuries while playing golf.
